Detroit Villages Community Gathering, This Saturday, Sept. 19th!

Over the past year we through the emergedetroit.org network have had some great conversations about the relationship between gatherings of Christians and the world in which they live, work, and play. For some of our intentional communities in the Detroit Villages, a disciplined life together helps form house members as better disciples. These folks also tend to be acutely aware that this kind of internal transformation can only go so far in sharing the love of Jesus with the world.

If Christians around the world are only viewed as closed fraternities, no matter how holy, how is that fulfilling our shared great comission?

But, in line with all the creativity and locality happening in Detroit, these friends in our community of communities are showing just how creative they can be in getting outside of themselves to fulfill this call to serve and be in relationship with others. Numerous backyard, urban gardens and CSA's give excuses to meet neighbors, share tomatoes, and model a kind of openness about which I think the Bible teaches us. Hospitality houses, potlucks for everyone, intentional presence in forgotten neighborhoods, entrepreneurial projects on college campuses - I'm constantly inspired by the ways in which these folks are leading the church in it's mission to share God's grace in real ways.

I am reminded by these folks that we are an "Us" only to the extent that that identity helps us be "For Others."

Do you have a community through which to claim this radical identity as a follower of Jesus? If so, tell us about it by leaving comments or blogs at emergedetroit.org. If not, join us for one of our bible studies, community gatherings or other events. As we participate in the renewed life of this City and metropolitan area, so too are we eager to participate in the new lives of all those people we encounter each day!

Excited for us as we live for others,
