Detroit Villages Community Gathering, This Saturday!
On Monday night Frank Rashid of Marygrove College met with the new Catalyst group lead by Josh McKamie. Frank gave a great history of the urban crisis in Detroit to the gathered WSU students preparing for their own service and mission projects in the city.
A main point in Frank's presentation was the disconnect that so many Metro Detroiters make between the systemic causes of the city's woes and their perceptions that Detroit's current leaders should just "get their own act together." As suburbanites we forget the ways in which the GI Bill, federal incentives for new home construction, laws prohibiting renovation of old structures, and guidelines for creating homogenous communities (ie whites only) contributed directly to the drain of economic resources from our center city.
Now though, some people of faith are trying to figure out what living as intentional neighbors really is, in spite of the years of systemic separation. This Saturday a number of Detroit Villages, a United Methodist sponsored experiment in creating Christian community in Detroit, will gather at St. Peter's church to celebrate the ways in which they live out and learn about the Way of Jesus among/from their neighbors.
With a potluck, teaching time, music, prayer, and fellowship these Community Gatherings are great ways for those living together in the city to meet those interested in Detroit's living communities. Its a chance to share stories of radical hospitality and transformation through displacement.
I hope you'll join us as we stare down the monster of urban crisis and cover it in the green bean casserole of Jesus' goodness, mercy and grace!
Carl
