Over the past two weeks friends from the emergedetroit network and beyond have been chipping in to support a new collection of songs meant to help worshiping communities claim their place in the fight against modern-day human trafficking. Called "The Abolitionist Hymnal" this project pulls from 19th Century anti-slavery hymn texts, reclaiming them and setting them to new tunes for congregations and worship gatherings to sing today.

One of the exciting plans for the Abolitionist Hymnal is the companion remix cd that will eventually be produced. This cd will collect local renditions of each of the newly developed hymns from choirs, individual artists, etc who make each song their own. More than just a great way to hear more good music, we think that this process of engaging other gatherings in the co-creation of this resource will help draw more people into the active role of modern day abolitionists.

None of this is too far out for those of us in the Wesleyan tradition. Ever since our founders instructed us to "sing lustily" we've known the power of worship music to teach those gathered the characteristics of what it means to live as an active disciple of Jesus Christ today. As participants in the emerging expressions of Church we also know that such teaching will have its full effect when worship music is owned and reformulated to speak in the cultural languages of each community.

I hope that your community lives from a rich worship life. If you are interested in supporting the Abolitionist Hymnal, check the link above. We'd love to hear how your fellow Christians might live out this call to free enslaved people today by the power of God's Holy Spirit speaking through our singing!
