The New CommunityThe Emergent conversation comes at an opportune time for those of us interested in seeing the Holy Spirit at work among young people. For many of us, young adulthood is "a time between." We are no longer youth and yet haven't quite let go of our youth. We are nomadic, moving from home to school to internships to new jobs. We tend to speak in unique post-modern cultural languages of music, movies, politics, literature, and social interaction. In the midst of all this - where does God fit? Luckily, this movement ceases to ask the question in those terms. God, rather than fitting into a religion-sized hole in our hectic schedules, is seen as the source and sustainer of this special time in our lives. Jesus and the new community that he announces offers the fellowship that challenges our lonely wandering. The Holy Spirit inspires us to find and express the awesome power of the Divine in and through our particular post-modern culture. This radical turn toward God by people today is nothing but another chapter in the long history of such awakening. The earliest house churches were made up of followers of Christ who celebrated their oneness with Christ and their oneness with each other through Christ. Their worship celebrated God and the transformative message for the world that God gave them in their gathering. The Methodists in England recognized the power of practicing faith through means of grace like hearing the word preached, visiting the sick, abstaining from substances like alcohol that had become pandemic societal problems, and meeting together in prayer and worship. So welcome to the newest installment of the moving-toward-God's-future church. Like the story of Pentecost, we pray that the fire of the Holy Spirit will descend and bless this conversation with tongues to speak and ears to hear. We in this community believe that claiming and enacting the ancient-future practices of worship and discipleship will make us strong witnesses through the Holy Spirit for the community of Christ. We invite you to check out the rest of the conversation through the links below and to come and follow Christ with us! Web Sites Churches/Communities Magazines |
