Transforming Leaders
About
The Transforming Leaders Program and Motown Mission internships are summer-long, intentional living, mission/service placements in the city of Detroit for college students. Interns live and serve together in various settings around the City.

The dates for this service experience are May 31 through August 5, 2011. This includes one week of pre-program training and eight weeks of internship.
Interns usually work at their host sites four days a week. One night per week, the young adults participate in a group Bible Study and worship time with other interns. Once a week, the interns experience worship and explore different careers in service through a dialogue with lay and ordained leadership of various partnering non-profit organizations and United Methodist Institutions.
At least once during the summer, the intern will speak to his/her partner church about the summer service experience - this could be to a Sunday school group, the congregation, youth group, or other.
In many ways working with Young Leaders Initiative in the Transforming Leaders and Motown Mission program exceeds participating in a summer job and crosses into a summer life. The time expectations can be great, but the potential for personal rewards that come from this kind of commitment are even greater. While much is expected of each young adult leader, much is given in return in the form of love from the kids/clients, support and fun from living in a community, and the energy that comes from working with God foremost in mind. You never really know how much you can receive until you truly give.

Last week was an amazing kick-off to our summer in downtown Detroit. We had a great group of kids and adults come in from Indiana to serve the people of Detroit in numerous ways, including:
-"overhauling" a parking lot for a new farmer's market
-renovating a crumbling concrete porch and sidewalk
-repainting the exteriors of a house and garage
-working on their hands and knees in an urban garden

Christians have become known for things they oppose by speaking out and standing up for things they believe in. Not all of these examples of speaking out are positive- the people of West Borough Baptist Church protest against homosexuality at the funerals of fallen soldiers. They came to my town once and local college students stood in front of their picket line and tried to shield mourning family and friends against their negative comments. If it is the goal of the West Borough Baptist church to convert anyone they sure have a strange way of doing.

Thinking about spiritual gifts- I think I have been given a few gifts. Leadership and worship leading are some of my gifts. I am comfortable in front of large groups of people and I love to lead worship. This summer I have been able to use my gifts. Each week I lead some group games with the groups that come to Motown Mission and I have been able to lead worship a few times each week.

For each of our projects we have a volunteer come in from the community. It's always something new and exciting time to work with someone new. Most of our "Project Directors" have a special skill that pertains to the job that we are doing. This helps us because if we are not quite sure what we are doing they can help teach us.

This week was the first week of Motown Mission. Our group was awesome! This week I did like a zillion things- here is my top ten:
10. Worked in an urban garden and tilled the earth with my hands for two hours.
9. Ate a raisin bagel with cream cheese just about everyday.
8. Watched middle school students rip a ball into pieces playing a vicious game of seated basketball.
7. Talked to a lady whose house we fixed while she showed me every photo of her family from the seventies to the present.

Hey Everyone!
This week I had the chance to explore some other organizations of interest; Cass, Deaf Shalom Zone, Emerge Detroit, charter for compassion,Findyourfaith and the list goes on. I must say that of all the places I have looked at, Cass Community is where my heart is. It isn't because of anything their website says or how they present the information but because I know the people there. I know Faith Fowler and what her and the rest of that congregation do for the city and each other. Every year I have the chance to visit just for a weekend and see what they are all about and every year I go home with a few more God moments on my list. I admire them most because they find unique ways to employ and teach the people around them.

Faith Community Detroit:
Hey guys, we are a new volunteer program in Detroit(just started Nov '09). We live on-site the Covenant House Michigan property (MLK) and work full-time for the agency in a social-work kind of way. None of us are originally from here and would like to meet other intentional communities and individuals that are like-minded/interested in similar things. Due to security, we probably cannot host events here at our house but we would love to meet up with others in the area.
