N.O.A.H. Project

Central United Methodist Church, the first Protestant congregation in Michigan and a constant voice for peace and justice, has been offering the “Bag Lunch” program to those in need since 1976. In 1999, Central determined that the provision of food was merely “a drop in the bucket” in their efforts to alleviate the unmet needs that the poor and homeless face on a daily basis.

As a result, Central partnered with Family Service, Inc., a social service organization with over 125 years of experience serving families in Detroit and Wayne County, to create The N.O.A.H. Project. This collaboration was based on the shared belief that the needs of the community can best be met through cooperative efforts of those with diverse experiences, skills, and talents.

Initially, N.O.A.H. consisted of a parish nurse provided by Central, a project coordinator/social worker provided by Family Service., and a US-2 Missionary
provided by the United Methodist Church. As the needs of the community have changed so has N.O.A.H. Now, N.O.A.H. has expanded to include a domestic violence counselor, several caseworkers, an employment counselor, bag lunch coordinator and a creative/expressive arts coordinator to further meet the holistic health of all participants.

The N.O.A.H. Project is a culmination of services that exist to assist in meeting
an individual’s basic and emotional needs. This combined unity of work is our striving to help others while helping ourselves and the community. The atmosphere
is based on openness and mutual respect. We want to make a difference by providing support for people who have no one else.

We support individuals by developing trusting relationships founded upon acceptance — acceptance of who that person is. When acceptance is combined with compassion and honesty, it builds trust. By creating an environment founded on trusting relationships, we develop a family for people so they have the support and opportunity to change and grow.
