The EMERGE Community gathers in 3 ways:

Gatherings are local groups of young/emergent-minded people who gather together (weekly if possible) to seek personal and social holiness with the support of loving friends. These gatherings are the most basic, organic, expressions of Christ's church. Together these groups pray, study the bible, have fun, worship, confess to one another, support each other in faithfulness, and serve in mission together. Geographically dispersed, these groups meet at public and private locations (Coffeehouses, residences, churches) around the metropolitan Detroit area. Up to date information on the character and meeting schedule of each Gathering can be found on each group's profile page. Other groups are encouraged to sign up their group on this site so that persons seeking to connect can find a group close to them either geographically or based on interests/spiritual type. Training for small group leaders is available twice a year at RE-Member (a gathering at Lake Louise Camp in Boyne Falls, MI).

Worship is another chance to gather together. We are working to develop a monthly Love Feast service and Coffeehouse fellowship. This will be offered for The EMERGE Community at unique places around the metro area. Look for details on these worship gatherings coming soon! Individual Gatherings are welcome to use this as a time to gather with other young adult/emergent groups around the area for ancient-future worship celebrating the Wesleyan tradition along with other influences. Whenever the community gathers in worship we seek to create authentic worship in the contextual language of Metro Detroit young adults that also reclaims some historic worship practices like regular Eucharist, Love Feasts, etc. Leaders also intentionally seek a repertoire of worship music that has both theological depth and musical distinctiveness. In that regard a movement of reclaiming Wesleyan hymns is integral to the life the Emerge Community. This repertoire of worship music is developed by local artists and shared with other worshiping communities via the internet.

Extras are those gatherings that happen from time to time and that draw participants from various Emerge Gatherings. Some Extras include:

  • Late Night Bible Study - discussions on controversial biblical passages held in local pubs and coffeehouses in 4-8 week sessions;
  • Area Wide YA Mission Trips - ASP, Mt. TOP, Sierra Service Project, etc;
  • RE-Member - A young adult gathering at Lake Louise Camp in Boyne Falls, MI primarily focused on gathering young adults who will be serving in missional internships during the summer
  • The 2009 Holy Land Pilgimage - join other young adults and new clergy of the Detroit area United Methodist Church on this trip to walk where Jesus walked.

These Extras are particularly focused on connecting the wisdom of Scripture with our lives in the world and are designed to provide another route to both deeper discipleship for Christians on the journey AND introduction to Christian discipleship for newcomers.
