Session Three: Chapters 3 through 5
Chapter 3
The part of this chapter that stuck out to me were the apologies. The apologies were for our self-righteousness and hypocrisy; our endorsement of slavery; our mistreatment of homosexuals; the medieval crusades; and for saying the Earth was flat. I would have liked to attended these sermons to hear how they dealt with the failings of the church both in the past and in the present.
Chapter 4
The part of this chapter that captured my attention was the story about the hotel clerk and the author. The exchange of book recommendations along with emails would have been a good way to start a relationship as opposed to just worrying about someones conversion moment. Yet the author loses the email address. The part that is most telling of the chapter was that the pastor present called it a tactic. As if this was a way to get another name on his saved list and not really care about the person. This isn't a very flattering image.
Chapter 5
While reading this chapter I imagined what I what I was going to write for this section of the blog. I guess what I want to say about this chapter is to read Paul Among the People: The Apostle Reinterpreted and Reimagined in His Own Time by Sarah Ruden. There is a chapter on homosexuality that I found very enlightening.
