At a recent young adult conference my friend Matt Bistayi gave a keynote address about a lifestyle of following Jesus he called "Quadri-living." His idea was that the richest experience of discipleship comes when we integrate moments of biblical study with ongoing experiences of service to the poor, conversations that explore and question our understanding of the texts, and full participation in the traditional life of our church heritages as a way to connect with our ancient faith. You can hear more about this and other components to Matt's talk at the podcast link above. In light of Matt's thoughts, another email from a friend of mine caught my eye. She is helping to organize a prayer vigil for the Kairos Prison Ministry in Texas. This connection with the imprisoned is something that reaches back into the Methodist heritage deeply. Visiting those in prison was an important outgrowth of the Wesleyan revival. In fact, it was the work of individual Methodists that helped many institutions to be more respectful of their wards and even helped to free some debtors imprisoned unfairly. Reaching further back, though, we are a people for whom many of our central texts written by Paul come from times when he himself was imprisoned for his faith in Jesus. If you would like to live "quadri-ly" and help support the Kairos Prayer Vigil, you can sign up for a 30 minute time slot between May 15 and 18 by emailing Rebecca at beccaschaef@yahoo.com. Or, if there are other ways that you and your family or friends have lived according to the 4-way expression of our faith, comment on the blog with your thoughts, ideas, and encouragements to others to live similarly! It is with all these shared ideas that we can live in an "and, and, and" mentality about all the ways we can follow Jesus in authentic and meaningful ways! »
